In a new twist to the efforts to find the head of the newly constituted National Investigation Agency,R V Raju,a 1975-batch IPS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre,is believed to have emerged as a strong contender, thus widening the field of candidates.

Raju, currently Vigilance Commissioner in J-K and Kashmir, joins a list of three other IPS officers who are in contention for the post, sources said. Raju, who was posted as Additional Director in CBI prior to his recall to the state cadre in September last year, was not called for the first round of interviews despite being in the shortlist.

Raju is pitted against BSF ADG A P Singh, another officer with a long stint in the CBI. A P Singh is a 1974 batch IPS officer from the Jharkhand cadre.

Karamvir Singh,a 1975 batch officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre currently posted as ADG North of CRPF,and Director General of Vigilance Bureau in Haryana S C Sinha,a 1975 batch officer, are the other candidates who are being considered for the post. While A P Singh,Karamvir Singh and Sinha were called for interview in the first round itself,Raju was invited sometime later, sources said.

They said the Government will announce the name of the selected candidate quite soon as the process has already been delayed beyond expectation.

The NIA was established on January 1 this year after having hurriedly constituted under an Act of Parliament in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November. It is mandated to investigate matters relating to eight scheduled offences, including terrorist strikes.
