A jilted lover and his friend allegedly set afire a 14-year-old student in Kharnasi village

A jilted lover and his friend allegedly set afire a 14-year-old student in Kharnasi village of coastal Kendrapara district on Sunday.

The police said the incident took place in the afternoon when accused Ekadashi Das 18 along with his friend set the girl afire after pouring kerosene on her.

Das and his friend reportedly locked the girl in a room before they set her afire,inspector-in-charge of Mahakalpada police station Abhinav Dalua said.

It seems Das was in love with the Class VIII girl,but was spurned repeatedly. We suspect the girl may have been sexually assaulted before she was set afire, said Mahakalpada inspector-in-charge Dalua. The girl,now battling for her life with about 60 per cent burns,has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital,Cuttack. An FIR has been lodged with the Mahakalpada police station. Both the accused are absconding.

Two days ago,in a similar incident,a suspected jilted lover had stabbed a tribal girl in Kendrapara town in broad daylight.

The 17-year-old girl was on her way to college on a bicycle when the accused stabbed h0er with a sharp-edged weapon.
