Italian marines get bail

The Kerala High Court granted conditional bail to the Italian marines arrested for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen in February

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to the Italian marines arrested for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen in February. The court had on Tuesday rejected the marines demand to quash the FIR.

The court directed the marines Latorre Massimillano and Salvatore Girone to furnish a bond of Rs 1 crore each and two Indian citizens as sureties.

They must report at the office of the Kochi police commissioner every day before 11 am,stay within Kochi city police limits and surrender their passports to the Kollam magistrate court.

The court said since the visa of the accused had expired, they should be released only after getting the visa period extended by the foreign registration office. Their details and photos should be circulated to all seaports and airports to prevent their escape. The court insisted that the sureties should not leave Kerala either. Earlier,an NRI from Kerala,John Thekkekkara, who has property in Italy, had offered to act as surety.

The Kerala government did not object to the bail, but sought speedy trial of the case in Kollam court. It also said that the marines availability for the trial must be ensured.
