Ishrat family welcomes HC order on CBI probe

Ever since the encounter on June 15,2004,in which Ishrat Jahan,a 19-year-old college girl, was killed along with three others Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai,Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali Akbar Ali Rana her family has been demanding a CBI probe.

With the HC ordering on THursday that the probe be handed over to the CBI,Ishrats mother,Shamima Raza, said: This was something we always wanted. My daughter was killed in cold blood. We want the real truth to come out in the CBI investigation. We have full faith in it. Shamima had earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe.

Ishrats sister,Mussarat, said: We did not trust the SIT earlier because they are also a part of Gujarat Police. We were afraid that the SIT would leave out the key police officials involved and only arrest the junior rank officers. But,she added, they trusted SIT member Satish Verma.

On the other hand,Gopinath Pillai, father of Javed Sheikh, said while he trusted the SIT,it was better that the CBI probe the case.

We didnt expect much from the SIT but their report took me by surprise. I am happy with them also but the CBI will conduct a fair probe, Pillai said.

Ishrats family hoped that the CBI would give priority to the case, claiming that it cannot be compared to the probe into the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati encounters. Even the SIT has proved Ishrats innocence. In other encounters, various factors like extortion rackets and politics played a role, but Ishrats encounter was purely a case of seeking Chief Minster Narendra Modis attention for rewards, said Mussarat.
