An Indian man who won a Lexus car in a raffle draw here has been accused of offering a bribe to three policemen for his release after he was arrested for possessing alcohol.
The man,who is referred to by courts only as A K,denies the charge and instead claimed that policemen demanded 50,000 dirhams USD 1,361 and the car he won as bribe to release him.
8220;I am not guilty. They asked me for a bribe to release me. When I told them I was heading to Jebel Ali to collect a Lexus car I had won in Dubai Shopping Festival DSF,they asked me to give them the car for my release.
When I told them that I would take a 50,000 dirhams encashment,they asked me to pay them 25,000 dirhams each and that8217;s what happened,8221; he was quoted as saying to 8216;Gulf News8217;.
The 35-year-old bank clerk defended himself at the Dubai Court of First Instance where prosecutors accused him of offering three policemen 50,000 dirhams cash and a Lexus car in bribe in order to release him after his arrest for possessing liquor.
He was additionally charged with possessing alcohol for trading purposes,the report said. 8220;Your honour,I have been working in the banking industry for nearly 13 years. Never in my life had I ever offered or accepted bribe. I did possess alcohol but I am not guilty on the bribery charges,8221; the newspaper quoted him as saying to the Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout.
One of the reportedly bribed policemen,an Emirati police corporal,testified that they suspected A K8217;s vehicle and stopped him in Jebel Ali. 8220;We chased him down and stopped him from running away,although he resisted arrest. He offered us 50,000 dirhams and the Lexus car which he claimed he won in DSF for his release. On searching his car,300 whisky bottles were seized ,8221; the corporal claimed in his prosecution
statement.
A judgment will be heard on May 18.
