India has successfully negotiated a vision document with a 15-member United Nations Security Council committee on terrorism which, sources said, will emphasise zero tolerance towards any perpetrators or sponsors of terror.
India currently heads the UNSCs Counter Terrorism Committee, and Indias Ambassador to the UN,Hardeep Puri, was elected its Chairman in January 2011.
The statement talks of how to handle the problem of terrorism over the next decade and is likely to be taken up by the UN during the on-going 66th session of the General Assembly.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is attending this years UNGA and will be in New York for its high-level segment from September 22-26. He will be addressing the General Assembly on September 24.
The Counter Terrorism Committee has finalised the vision document and there is every likelihood of it being taken up during the UNGA. What it aims to do is outline an international response to counter-terrorism over the next decade, Puri told The Indian Express.
According to sources, the statement may be taken up on September 28,marking the tenth anniversary of adoption of the Resolution 1373 following the September 11,2001,attack on the US. The resolution, coming days after the attack, had established the CTC with the objective of ensuring compliance of its provisions by all member states.
