The Chinese incursion at Depsang plains along the Line of Actual Control LAC comes at a time when India is moving at a fast pace to develop four strategic roads in the area.
Five years after the Ministry of Home Affairs sanctioned the roads,125 km of the 270 km road length have been completed. While 90 per cent work on the LAYING of the roads has been done, surfacing or black topping has been finished on 45 per cent of them.
The Chinese might have got disturbed by the fact that we are building these roads at a fast pace now. The work has progressed considerably in the past six months, said a senior official.
While the Chinese too have built an excellent road network on the other side of the LAC,the official added that it was possible due to easy terrain.
The topography on our side is rugged and undulating.
The four strategic roads being built will connect Karzok to Chumar,Koyul to Zarsar,Phobrang to Marsimik La and Phobrang to Charste.
The pace of work in Ladakh fares much better than other roads being built along the China border in Arunachal Pradesh,Sikkim,Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. India is building 804 km of roads in all along the China border.
Earlier this week too,the Union Home Ministry reviewed the pace of work.
The ITBP were to complete the roads in 20128230; Lack of accessible tracks make us vulnerable, said a senior official. Chumar has emerged as an area of strategic importance and the road which will connect it to Karzok is aimed at providing an alternative approach in case of hostilities between Hanle and Chumar, the official added.
China has constructed a motorable road hardly 2 km from the Zarsar checkpost.
