Facing criticism for spending huge amounts of government money on the construction of memorials, parks and statues,Mayawati on Wednesday defended the projects in Lucknow, saying they would attract a large number of tourists from across the country.

Speaking to reporters, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister described them as pilgrim centres for those who have faith in the great men whose statues she got installed. She said the projects would also become a good source of income in future and leave a good impact on the local economy.

Stating that no entry fee would be charged at these spots for the next six months, she said the income from the sale of entry tickets after that would be used for the development of the Dalit-dominated areas in urban and rural parts of the state.

As per her plan, the income from the sale of tickets at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal would be used to lay concrete roads in villages. Similarly, the earnings from Kanshiram Smarak Sthal would be used to develop slum areas in urban parts under the Kanshiram Shahari Samagra Vikas Yojana. She said her government planned to publicise the parks and memorials to attract visitors. The tourism department would make tourists aware about these spots, she said.
