The government plans to set up a special body, the National Automotive Authority (NAA),to oversee the seven research and development centres coming up under its ambitious National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP).

Speaking to The Indian Express, joint secretary in the department of heavy industry,Ambuj Sharma, said,The NAA will not regulate the auto industry. Its function is to monitor functioning of the centres being set up under NATRiP. The NAA will be the coordinating, evaluating and accrediting body for these centres. After several delays in projects,Sharma said all centres should be operational by 2011-end.

NATRiPs proposed project in Uttar Pradeshs Rai Bareilly, had hit a wall due to problems of land acquisition. It was suggested that SAIL which acquired 740 acres at Jagdishpur,Amethi, when it took over sick Malvika Steel would give 100 acres to NATRiP for its centre. However, there has not been much headway.

We will get 100 acres from the ITI (the countrys first PSU in the field of telecommunications) to set up a centre for accident data analysis. We are still hopeful to get the land from SAIL on which NATRiP will set up a performance test centre for agricultural tractors and off-road vehicles, Sharma said. The joint secretary said the centre to be set up on ITI land should be functional by the year-end.
