Days after Assembly polls were announced to commence in West Bengal next month, the Centres interlocutor for talks on the Gorkhaland issue has asked the Home Ministry to withdraw him from the negotiations, arguing that he has shared his views with the government and there is little to be achieved as elections will now take place in the region.

Lt Gen Vijay Madan, who was appointed as the interlocutor in October 2009,told The Indian Express that he had asked to be excused as no further steps could be taken until a new government is formed in West Bengal. Home Ministry officials said they had received the request but said the matter was under consideration and Madans resignation had still not been accepted.

The retired officer has been in talks with the GJM Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and the central and state governments over the past two years and has submitted his report and views to the Home Ministry after consultation with stakeholders.

Elections have now been called and nothing further can be done. Whatever I have done so far is available with the ministry. During elections my hanging around would be a waste, Madan said.

The interlocutor said he was happy with the support he got from the ministry on the talks and said the Centre had been positive on the whole matter. This is the closest I could have brought them, the former officer, who has been associated with the Gorkhas during his service days, said.
