Goa rape: Cop faces probe for false charges

Goa Police have ordered an inquiry against the Inspector accused of refusing to register the complaint in the rape of a 25-year-old Russian.

The Goa Police have ordered an inquiry against Siddhant Shirodkar, the Inspector accused of refusing to register the complaint in the rape of a 25-year-old Russian, for drafting false charges in the FIR. The inquiry, which is to be conducted by an officer of the DSP-rank officer, was ordered by SP,South Goa.

According to Atmaram Deshpande,SP Special Branch, the inquiry was ordered after a letter pertaining to the drafting of false charges was marked by the Russian Consulate to the Goa Police. No complaint has been, however, lodged by the victim against Shirodkar.

The Russian girl was allegedly raped by John Fernandes,a politician from Colva,in the early hours of December 2. Fernandes, who had contested from the Benaulim Assembly seat from a political outfit Save Goa Front in 2007,is absconding.

As per the complaint lodged by the victim a copy of which is available with The Indian Express on December 2,she was molested and not raped. She was coaxed to sign the letter on pretext that action would be taken against the accused.

But she later realised that no action would be taken against him and the complaint too,was not of rape, but molestation, said lawyer Vikram Varma who is also the Russian Consulates representative in Goa.
