Naxal leader Kundan Pahan, accused in the beheading of Special Branch Intelligence officer Francis Induwar this month in Jharkhand, was injured in an encounter on October 25 and the security forces have reportedly zeroed in on him.
Sources told The Indian Express that Pahan, commander of the Maoist Platoon 39,was shot in the leg during an encounter and is undergoing treatment in jungles south of Ranchi. Security forces could pick him up in the coming days. Since Pahan may require to be moved for medical attention,a watch is also being kept on all medical facilities nearby.
The encounter reportedly took place on Sunday afternoon, near the Jonha falls in the Ormanjhi police station, and left four Maoists dead while three were arrested. The police were able to recover the body of one of the Maoists which is rare since they generally take away the bodies along with weapons, including an LMG,a .303 rifle and an INSAS rifle. The INSAS rifle,it is believed, was snatched from a CRPF patrol by the Maoists in 2007.
The operation to capture Pahan has been hampered by bad weather.
According to sources, the security forces are talking to the person who negotiated with the Jharkhand Police for release of Naxal leaders in exchange for Induwar to find out Pahans whereabouts.
