Chief Justice of Madras High Court Justice M Y Iqbal today urged lawyers to consider taking up labour disputes as ‘a god sent opportunity’ and help workers facing unfair labour practices from managements without seeking unnecessary adjournments.
Inaugurating the new Labour Court today,he said setting it up was a direct sequel to the court’s order suo motu asking the Centre and Puducherry governments to constitute it.
“A heavy responsibility has been cast on lawyers with the setting up of a separate labour court now and they should also realize that their service is service to humanity”,he said.
He also urged lawyers not to seek adjournments and to use provision of conciliation in the Industrial Disputes Act to fight for workers who face unfair labour practices of termination or removal from service by the managements.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy,who presided,said his government was keen on rapid industrialization of Puducherry,for which there should be cordial labour-management relations.
He said his government would consider the plea for financial aid for young lawyers and asked them not to resort to agitations over this
Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh who spoke said 70 per cent of labour disputes had been settled through conciliation. All disputes between employees and employers should be settled through peaceful dialogue.
