Fall in Love Again

Beauty, romance, dialogue and music,Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai got it all right

When Nisha meets Sundar nee Montu, there’s a bit of a mistaken identity going on and she thinks his name is Popat Lal. So she imagines him to be someone jiska rang kaala.. kad chota.. tond kurte ke baahar hogi… But when he comes knocking,it’s Dev Anand. So we have Nisha stuttering “Mr Po,Po,Po,Popat Lal?” He gives the Dev Anand smile and says,Itne bahut se Po nahin sirf ek Po. Needless to say he has her at “Hello.”

Nasir Husain crafts a romantic caper set in Darjeeling. Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai was Husain’s first film as a producer and is embellished with Husain staples — young lovers meet in a hill station,a dash of mistaken identity,a murder,a bit of a suspense, peppy music, delightful dialogues and the eventual happy ending. When the film released in 1961,it competed with a stellar line up comprising Ganga Jamuna,Junglee,Hum Dono,Sasural,Gharana,Kabuliwala and yet,Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai managed to tickle the box office and was a huge musical hit.

The romantic pairing of Dev-Asha Parekh is zingy. Theirs is a nok jhok waala love. He is flirty, she is vivacious. He calls her “gaonwaali,” she is spunky enough to tell him off with a “I’m not your baba or baby. You go to hell.” They have arguments but then he knows how to render her speechless. The magic, you see,is in her eyes. So when they’ve been fed bhaang-waale ladoos by local thugs, she asks him aapko nasha chadh raha hai? he replies with,a dugna.. ek unn ladooun ka aur ek inn aankhon ka… sachi bahut sundar hain… uff yun maa. And then we have the beautiful romantic number about Asha Parekh’s eyes. It’s a song she remembers the film by. “The song about the eyes became a huge hit. I consider myself very lucky to have worked in the golden era of Hindi films. This particular song I still remember, because it was about the beauty of the heroine’s eyes and after that everyone started associating me with having beautiful eyes,” says Parekh.

The Uff yun maa gets to me every time because I want to know what the expression means. Literally. Finally,I got the answer in an old interview of lyric writer Hasrat Jaipuri who has written the songs of this film with Shailendra. About this creation,Hasratsaab said,“I wrote a few songs sometimes where I went purely by mood. Like Yeh aankhen uff yun maa and Aiya aiya suku suku. Somehow the audience liked them too. I think if a song is well-fitted with the mood,it goes down well with the audience,” he said.

Parekh, who was Husain’s muse, got to show off her dancing prowess in this film and looks back at the shooting with fondness. She remembers shooting at the famed Teesta bridge and the beautiful fog that was created by Husain to film his songs. She also remembers Darjeeling for the massive love the denizens showered on her co-star. “We were staying in the beautiful Windamere Hotel which had a beautiful garden. We shot portions of Yeh aankhen uff yun maa in the hotel but the crowd that came to see Dev turned so unruly that the garden became a ground. I was just starting out then and I had never seen such adulation for a star. The people — they were crazy about Dev,” she says.

Dev Anand in his black and white films was another era itself. Though he was lampooned for his mannerisms in his subsequent films,in this one his charm is addictive. Its in the way he teases the girl — when she’s thinking aloud how she and he can never click and says,“Lekin mohabbat impossible,” and then covers it up with,“Drame ka dialogue yaad aa gaya tha,” he smiles naughtily at her and says,“Kahin jeevan ka drama toh nahin.” Dev had his emotional bits too — the speech about true love that he makes in front of the girl’s father and the hurt in his eyes when Nisha doesn’t believe in his innocence are commendable. Incidentally, such was the impact of Dev’s stardom in those days that a cute little parody about his evergreen status was based on a song from this film. Raise your hands all of you who have sung Sau saal pehle Dev Anand jawaan tha… aaj bhi hai aur kal bhi rahega.

The film’s music incidentally serves as a huge recall value. The entire album is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi. You can hear Teri zulfon se judaai toh nahin maangi thi everyday and not get bored of it. Ditto for the romantic Sau saal pehle and not to forget the evergreen title track Jiya o jiya with Dev on a car singing to his ladylove who is in a train. Does the picturisation remind you of another song? Aradhana’s fabled Mere sapno ki raani, maybe? Inspiration, anyone?

For all the hit music, this was the only partnership between Husain and Shankar-Jaikishen. Come 1966 and a Bengali babu entered Husain’s life and bowled him and his favourite hero Shammi Kapoor over so much that a new chapter of Indian film music was written. The film was Teesri Manzil and the Bengali babu was RD Burman. But that story we all know. For now,it’s back to Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai.
