The BJP Wednesday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to explain charges levelled by political activist Arvind Kejriwal on the alleged influence of Reliance Industries Ltd behind the exit of Jaipal Reddy from the Petroleum Ministry in the Cabinet reshuffle.
Why has the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas been changed? Is it any malfunction in the ministry that has persuaded PM to effect this change? Or is it that Jaipal Reddy was not found as a convenient minister,or is this yet another example of corporate interests taking precedence over national good? senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh said in a press statement.
Describing Reddys exit as a scandalous episode,Singh said this change cannot be treated as effected either for greater efficiency of the ministry or for the welfare of the citizens or for national good and demanded that the PM must explain,he has a duty to,and we have a right to know.
He also narrated the contention between the Petroleum Ministry and RIL that went to the arbitration and sought to know whether the government was going to dilute its stand on the issue of comprehensive CAG audit in the wake of resistance from the company.
CPM took a similar stand and said it doubted that Reddy was shifted because he turned down RILs demand for a hike in gas prices and increase in capital expenditure.
While Kejriwal claimed that Mani Shankar Aiyar was removed from Petroleum Ministry during UPA-I under pressure from the corporates, the Rajya Sabha member dismissed the suggestions. I was minister for oil for 20 months. I dont think that any corporate house decided that I would become Sports Minister, Aiyar told CNN IBN.
Rejecting Kejriwals allegations,Congress general secretary B K Hari Prasad said,It is baseless. Nowadays it is fashionable of IAC to make accusations.
