Ex-CPM MLA shot dead in Bengal

Dilip Sarker, the former CPM MLA from Baraboni in Burdwan district, was shot dead by motorbike-borne assailants

Dilip Sarker, the former CPM MLA from Baraboni in Burdwan district, was shot dead by motorbike-borne assailants on Sunday during his routine morning walk near his house at Kulpi. He had received multiple bullet wounds on his chest and abdomen. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sarker was overseeing the campaign for panchayat polls for his party in the district and was one of the senior CPM leaders who beside being a secretariat member of the Burdwan District Committee was also the district secretary of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions CITU,the labour wing of the CPM.

Accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of indulging in politics of vengeance,CPM state secretary Biman Bose said all the assailants were TMC cadres. He said by killing Dilip Sarker,Trinamool has made its intentions clear. The CPM will hold rallies across the state on Monday to protest the murder and has also called a 12-hour bandh in Asansol sub-division. Bose said that so far 13 CPM workers have been killed.

The TMC,however, blamed Sarkers death on internal feud in the CPM. Denying partys involvement in the killing,Agriculture Minister Moloy Ghatak, who hails from Burdwan, said Sarkers death was the result of a factional feud within the CPM. TMC general secretary Mukul Roy said that Sarker was accused of woman trafficking in the past.
