Former Israel president jailed for rape
TEL AVIV: Former President Moshe Katsav was sentenced on Tuesday to seven years in jail for rape,a case that brought shame to Israels highest office and sent a firm message to a transfixed public that no one was above the law. Katsav had denied charges he twice raped an aide when he was a cabinet minister in the late 1990s,and molested or sexually harassed two other women who worked for him during his 2000-2007 term as president.
JuD announces 10 crore reward for killing pastor Terry Jones
Islamabad: The Jamaat-ud-Dawah on Tuesday announced a reward of Rs 10 crore for anyone who kills American pastor Terry Jones,who oversaw the burning of the Quran in the US on Sunday. The reward was announced by JuD leader Amir Hamza,while chairing a meeting of the Tehrik Hurmat-e-Rasool. The Pakistan government strongly condemned the desecration of the Quran by the American pastors,describing it as a despicable act aimed at provoking dissent and discord.
Syria fires governor after 7 protesters killed
DAMASCUS: Syria sought Tuesday to contain the first serious intrusion of the Arab worlds political unrest by firing the Faisal Kalthoum,Governor of Daraa,where a government crackdown killed seven protesters over the weekend. Daraa residents had been demanding his departure after security forces violently suppressed three days of protests by thousands calling for political freedom and an end to corruption. Daraa residents accused Kalthoum in office since 2006 of corruption.
Fire tears through Egypt Interior Ministry building
Cairo: Fire tore through an Egyptian Interior Ministry building in central Cairo on Tuesday and a ministry source said it was probably linked to a protest by police demanding the ministers resignation. Ambulances and at least five fire engines raced to the scene of the blaze,which appeared to have ripped through all seven storeys of the building,part of an Interior Ministry compound in central Cairo. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties. The demonstrators demands included better pay and conditions.
