Election effect: Budget session may be curtailed

Election schedules for four states and one Union Territory have been declared on Tuesday.

With election schedules for four states and one Union Territory being declared on Tuesday, there is a move to revise Parliament schedule, curtailing the duration of the budget session.

Sources said the session may now conclude on April 8,instead of April 21. The move envisages a shorter recess, from March 17 to 28.

According to the current time-table,the two Houses are supposed to meet again on April 4 after calling it a day on March 16. If carried through, the proposal would mean an effective reduction of only three working days, the sources said.

The move initially proposed a voting on Demands for Grants straightaway, but the two Leaders of Opposition Sushma Swaraj Lok Sabha and Arun Jaitley Rajya Sabha shot down the suggestion to bypass the standing committees. The revised proposal is yet to be endorsed by them.

Sources said the two Houses may make do with financial business during the budget session and the rest of the business may have to wait till the monsoon session.

Meanwhile,in the Lok Sabha,Chaudhary Lal Singh,Congress MP from Udhampur,on Tuesday urged the government to wage a war against Pakistan. I would like to appeal to wage a war for PoK,which is our terri tory,to teach a lesson to Pakistan, he said while participating in a discussion on the Bill to amend the Repatriation of Prisoners Act,2003.
