DU prof refutes Maoist link charges

Saibabas residence was allegedly used as a place to deposit stolen property.

Two days after a police team from Gadchiroli in Maharashtra searched his house,Delhi University professor G N Saibaba on Saturday refuted allegations that he had links with Maoist rebels and said he was being framed in the case.

According to the search warrant,Saibabas residence was allegedly used as a place to deposit stolen property. Stating that the charge of harbouring stolen property is particularly outrageous,baseless and despicable,Saibaba,who teaches English at the Ram Lal Anand College,said the items confiscated from his house were not stolen property.

They took my laptop,pen-drives,college documents,hard disks,a tablet microchip,mobile phones,debit and credit cards,bank passbooks. Pen drives,hard disks,laptops were confiscated without proper seal,which leaves open the possibility of planting fake evidences later, he told reporters.

Saibaba said the confiscated hard drives,apart from containing teaching material,also had research material on his book on disciplinarization of Indian writing in English. I have collected a huge amount of literature for my book writings in various languages,archival material, he said.

A gathering of teachers and activists which included writer-activist Arundhati Roy,Delhi University Teachers Association president Nandita Narain,Zakir Husain College professor SAR Geelani among others also condemned the manner in which the raid was conducted.

When asked about the association with Hem Mishra,a JNU student held in Gadchiroli few weeks ago,Saibaba said,I have met him. He is a known cultural activist and member of Democratic Students Union. The last time I met him was in JNU,around a week before his arrest. Saibaba denied the allegation that he gave Mishra a micro chip which was recovered from the latters possession.

Denying the police claim of having records of Internet chat sessions between Saibaba and top Maoist leaders,he said,These chat sessions are between persons named Prakash and Chetan and the alleged Maoist top leadership,there is no mention of my name.
