Cricket diplomacy does not work: BJP

A day after Singh and Gilani met in Mohali, the BJP appeared disappointed with the outcome.

Days after L K Advani welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs Mohali invitation to Pakistans Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, the BJP today sought to draw a distinction between diplomacy and cricket and argued that cricket diplomacy with Islamabad has not worked in the past.

A day after Singh and Gilani met in Mohali, the BJP appeared disappointed with the outcome. BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said Pakistan did not show any goodwill. There was no assurance on handing over the perpetrators of the 26/11 terror attacks to India,he said.

Hussain said the BJP has always favoured good relations with Pakistan, but we see cricket and diplomacy differently. The UPA government should realise that cricket diplomacy with Pakistan has not worked in favour of India,he said. In 2005,there was a similar cricket diplomacy initiative. But Mumbai became the target of a terror attack in 2008, he said.

Last week,Advani had welcomed Singhs invitation to Gilani to watch the World Cup semi-final match in Mohali, but underlined that there should be zero tolerance towards terrorism. He had also said that Pakistan should dismantle the terror infrastructure on its soil before the revival of the composite dialogue process.

Arguing that the Prime Minister had in the past asserted that composite dialogue can begin only after settling terror-related issues,Hussain sought to know whether the government has got any assurance from Pakistan that it would not allow its territory to be used for perpetrating terror acts against India.
