The CPM has finally set in motion the much-talked about rectification process with the Politburo, which met here over the weekend, conducting a self-critical analysis of its collective functioning and the working style of its individual members.
Kickstarting the rectification exercise,Politburo members gave their assessment about themselves and the working style of others during the two-day meet. The party has already decided to start the process from the top. The individual views of the members about themselves and others and the collective assessment of the Politburo would now be placed before the Central Committee which is scheduled to meet in January end, a senior leader told The Indian Express.
We are trying to rejuvenate our party. The rectification is an exercise in that direction, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said after the meeting. A press communique issued by the party said the rectification report of the Politburo was discussed (and) this will be finalised and placed before the Central Committee.
The rectification document has outlined the guidelines for strengthening democratic centralism as the organisational principle of the party, ensuring proper integration of parliamentary and extra-parliamentary work, maintenance of Communist norms and values and remoulding the outlook of the party members towards upholding progressive values.
The partys central committee had finalised the document two months ago and the party plans to complete the first phase of the process by June next year. Although decided by the CPM Party Congress last year, the efforts to set in motion the rectification exercise gained momentum after the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
While analysing the election debacle, the CPM had found out disturbing erosion of party standards and Communist values among its rank and file. It had concluded that parliamentarism was leading to open violation of party norms and decided to initiate steps to remove the organisational weaknesses and rectify the wrong trends in the party.
