The Congresss first list of 77 candidates bears a clear Rahul Gandhi stamp, with 16 first-timers being below 40 years of age, eight of whom are straight from the Youth Congress.
The list, released late on Monday in New Delhi, also drops enough hints of the Congress plan of winning back minorities by fielding 21 Muslim candidates. By nominating a good number of women 14 the Congress has also sought to challenge Chief Minister Nitish Kumars much-hyped agenda of garnering women votes by calling them a caste-neutral constituency post-50 per cent reservation to women in panchayat elections.
While former MP Lovely Anand, the wife of incarcerated former MP and Saharsa Rajput leader Anand Mohan, will contest from Alamnagar, state Congress chief Choudhary Mehboob Ali Qaisar will contest from his current seat,Simri Bakhtiyarpur. Congress Legislature Party leader Ashok Kumar Ram would contest from Kusheshwar Sthan SC. Former minister in the Nitish government,Nagmani, who reached the Congress via the RJD,will contest from Morwa.
While Rahulji did play a big role in infusing youth power in candidate selection, the party has tried to maintain a fair balance of youth and experience besides proper caste and community representation, Bihar Congress chief spokesperson Premchand Mishra said, claiming no one in the list had criminal cases against them. Since Rahulji has dubbed Nitish and Lalu tired leaders, the Congress had to show its young faces.
The candidates from the Youth Congress include Amit Kumar Tunna Riga,Abhilasha Uraon Manihari,Arvind Choudhary Hayaghat,Babita Kumari Patepur,Dr Tarun Kumar Samastipur,Siddharth Kshatriya Moinuddinnagar and Anita Ram Kalyanpur.
The Congress, however, has some reasons to worry with Lovely Anand and Sadhu Yadav not getting their share of tickets. Sadhu Yadav resigned as vice-president of the Congress campaign committee in protest against his candidates not making it to the list.
