As his face-off with the government escalated,Army Chief General V K Singhs support base among the political class was running thin as some senior Congress leaders who had earlier supported him on the age row also appeared to be distancing themselves following his allegation of bribe offer and leakage of his controversial letter regarding defence preparedness to the Prime Minister.
I dont want to comment on this. That was a different issue, this is a different issue, Capt Amarinder Singh, who had earlier written to Defence Minister A K Antony supporting Singhs contention on his age, told The Indian Express on Thursday. Congress MP from Maharajganj Harsh Vardhan also wrote a letter to the Defence Minister demanding the sacking of the Army Chief in the interest of the country and the Army.
The Congress party, which was equivocal on this issue till now,on Thursday hardened its stance against the Army Chief, dismissing his contention in his controversial letter to the PM. It is ridiculous to suggest that every nut and bolt is procured by the ministry. Army is autonomous at many levels and when big bucks comes into play, the ministry comes in, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury told reporters.
It is a very sensitive issue. The country is being visited by leaders, including those from our neighbouring country. There should be restraint and constraint. Our patience should not be viewed as our weakness, she said.
She said that no one would compromise on the defence preparedness of the nation and anyone pointing fingers at the Defence Ministry was not only doubting the integrity of the government but also that of Parliament.
