Clinton,Mamata likely to discuss Teesta,FDI today

US Secretary of State is on a three-day visit to the country.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who reached Kolkata on Sunday, will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday. Clinton is on a three-day visit to the country, during which issues like Teesta and FDI are likely to come up.

The meeting with the Chief Minister, the first such exercise by any US secretary of state,is considered important as the Trinamool Congress chief had stalled the UPA governments efforts last year for FDI in retail.

The Indo-Bangla Teesta Water Treaty and the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail, which have been opposed by Banerjee, and other economic reforms are expected to be discussed.

After arriving from Bangladesh with a large delegation,Clinton attended a cultural programme at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations followed by a visit to the Victoria Memorial.

At the ICCR,she was treated to a dance performance by a troupe of seven survivors of sex trafficking who are members of city-based NGO Kolkata Sanved. After watching the performance, she complimented the girls, saying,I loved your breathing techniques8230;wonderful.

Clinton also saw a brief karate performance by a girl, who lives in a red-light area of Bihar.

US security personnel closely monitored the venues and the hotel where she was staying as the city was placed under a tight multi-ring security blanket.
