An eight-year-old boy died after reportedly complaining of chest pain while playing at Bajidpur village in Ferozepur district on Sunday, with family members saying that the symptoms appeared similar to those of a heart attack.

The child’s maternal grandfather, Sukhdev Sharma, said the boy was playing cricket with other children on the house rooftop in the afternoon. Several relatives had gathered at the residence for a function. The child’s parents arrived home on Sunday for the function, while the child had reached a day earlier to attend the function.

Sharma said, “Other children told us that he was unable to play properly and complained of restlessness,” Sharma said. He also said the boy stopped playing and sat aside before being brought downstairs as his condition worsened.

“When we brought him downstairs, he was restless and sweating. We opened the buttons of his shirt but could not understand what was happening. Suddenly, he stopped responding,” Sharma said.

The family rushed him to Amandeep Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“Doctors told us that there was no pulse, the heart had stopped beating. We couldn’t understand the sudden death of a small and healthy child. The entire family is in shock,” the grandfather said.

Dr Abhishek Arora, Director of Amandeep Hospital, Ferozepur said, “We cannot pinpoint that the child died due to heart attack but his symptoms as explained by the family correspond to that of a heart attack. When the child was brought here, he already had no pulse. The heart had stopped beating. The family wasn’t aware if the child was suffering from any cardiac disease as they had never got him examined in the past.”
