Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Azis on Tuesday defended the universitys decision to suspend a professor for alleged homosexual act on campus quarters. We cannot be seen as lenient; we cannot tolerate free sex, he said, reiterating such aberrant behaviour would not be accepted in an academic institution.

Chairman of the Modern Indian Languages Department of the AMU,Dr S R Siras, was suspended on February 10 after the university proctor received a video clip that allegedly showed him having consensual sex with a man. The source of the clip remains a mystery, even as rumours suggest that the professor was the victim of a sting operation by a local news channel.

This is not moral policing, insisted Azis, claiming that the argument that Siras was deprived of his privacy is wrong. The house in the university was allotted to him in good faith. It is inside the campus, which is a public place, Azis argued.

Furthermore, indulging in unnatural sex is still illegal in Uttar Pradesh, he said in reference to the Delhi High Courts July 2,2009 judgment, which is not applicable in UP.
