Vayalar Ravi in hospital after car accident in Liberia
NEW DELHI: Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi,who is on a nine-day tour to Africa,met with an accident while travelling in a car in Liberia on Thursday. He suffered minor injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. According to his office here,a speeding taxi collided with Ravis car while he was on his way to the airport in the Liberian capital,Monrovia. Shamma Jain,Indian Ambassador to Republic of Côte dIvoire with concurrent accreditation to Liberia,also suffered injuries in the accident.
Heavy snowfall forecast for Himachal
SHIMLA: The Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy snowfall across the higher reaches of Shimla,Kullu,Kinnaur,Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts between February 6 and 9. The Indian Met Department here has asked tourists and locals to avoid travelling to the higher reaches and remote areas in the snow prone zones during this time period. Rainfall and hailstorm have been forecast for the rest of the state.
Jamp;K Police arrest over 70 separatists
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday arrested over 70 separatists including Shabir Ahmad Shah,for allegedly funding and fomenting trouble in the state. With a near curfew-like situation prevailing in the Valley after the death of a boy on Sunday,a major crackdown began early on Thursday. Additional police forces were deployed outside the residence of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and his movement restricted,the sources said.
BSF captures Bangla intruder
GUWAHATI: BSF personnel caught a Bangladeshi intruder near the Muktapur border outpost in Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. A BSF official said a three to four Bangladeshis entered the adverse possession land held by India under Muktapur BOP in Jaintia Hills around 10 am. When they did not heed to BSFs warnings,the personnel fired a round in the air. Subsequently,one of them was caught by the BSF inside Indian territory and handed over to the BDR after a flag meeting.
Poachers kill rhino in Kaziranga
KAZIRANGA: A rhino was killed by poachers in the world famous Kaziranga National Park KNP in upper Assams Golaghat district on Thursday,making it the fourth such incident in the past month,forest officials said. The poachers could not take the horn as the foresters arrived as soon as they heard the gunshots. Combing operations have been launched to nab the poachers.
