UK author released on bail in Singapore

SINGAPORE: British author Alan Shadrake,who was arrested here on charges of criminal defamation and contempt of court,was on Tuesday released on bail. Freelance journalist Shadrake was arrested at a hotel on Sunday,a day after he arrived here to promote his book on alleged double standards in Singapore’s use of the death penalty. 75-year-old Shadrake’s arrest is linked to his violation of the laws of the city state and not on his views on the death penalty,the Singapore government said Tuesday.

China floods claim 37 lives,86 missing

BEIJING: Torrential rain that has lashed China for weeks has killed dozens more people in China’s west and forced authorities to close shipping locks on the massive Three Gorges Dam,officials said on Tuesday. At least 37 people died and another 86 were missing after landslides and flooding in northwestern Shaanxi province and and southwestern Sichuan since late last week.
