Metro coaches derail,services hit

KOLKATA: Two coaches of a metro train derailed near Central station during rush hour here Wednesday morning,triggering panic among hundreds of office-goers and disrupting services. The cause of the derailment,which occurred at around 9.30 AM,is yet to be ascertained,Metro Railway sources here said.

Though no passenger was injured,some people complained of uneasiness as lights went off inside the compartments immediately after the derailment.

Tribal girl gangraped in Jharkhand

GIRIDIH: A 16-year-old tribal girl has been allegedly gangraped in Giridih8217;s Tisri Tola and two persons have been arrested in this connection,police said Wednesday. The girl had gone to a village fair on Monday. On her return Tuesday,she told her parents about the ordeal she went through Monday night,police said. The girl identified one of the two arrested men.

Two lynched for abusing girls

GUMLA JHARKHAND: Two men were lynched and another was severely injured by villagers after they allegedly misbehaved with girls at a fair in Gumla district. The three were among six who misbehaved with girls at the fair on Tuesday,police sources said. The other three fled.

30 lose vision after cataract surgery

MANDLA: At least 30 people have lost their vision after they underwent cataract surgeries at a charitable trust-run hospital here. The surgeries were conducted over seven days at various villages of the district by the Yogiraj Hospital and Research Centre that is run by Swami Seetharamji Maharaj Hanuman Ghat Trust. Chief Trustee T S Mishra confirmed this after the incident came to light when the victims complained about loss of their eye-sight at a public hearing held by the Mandla Collector.

Anirudh Uppal to be new Jamp;K CRPF chief

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday approved the appointment of senior IPS officer Anirudh Uppal as head of the CRPF in Jamp;K. Uppal,a 1976-batch Himachal Pradesh cadre officer,is currently serving as the Additional Director Genetal in Indo-Tibetan Border Police and has earlier served as Inspector General with the elite NSG in Delhi.

SC upholds Sansar Chands conviction

NEW DELHI: THE Supreme Court Wednesday upheld the conviction of wildlife poacher Sansar Chand and directed stringent measures against such elements to protect the countrys ecology. This case reveals how avaricious and rapacious persons have by organised crime destroyed large parts of wildlife of India and brought many animals 8230; , the Bench said,upholding the five-year sentence awarded to Chand by a court in Rajasthan for smuggling leopard skin in 2003.

Population panel to meet today

NEW DELHI: More than five years after it was formed,the National Commission on Population NCP will meet Thursday. PM Manmohan Singh will chair the meet,which will be attended by,among others,CMs of Bihar,Madhya Pradesh,Rajasthan and UP,leaders of all major political parties,Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad,Family Welfare Minister Krishna Tirath,HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and Planning Commission Dy Chairman Montek S Ahluwalia. The PM is expected to present a new mandate to further stabilise population.
