US designates IM as a terror organisation
WASHINGTON: The US on Thursday slapped sanctions on Indian Mujahideen by designating it as terrorist outfit and said it had links with Pakistan-based groups like the LeT. IMs stated goal is to carry out terrorist actions8230; in furtherance of its objective8230; an Islamic Caliphate, the US state department said.
OMC truck with Rs 3.9 cr seized
HYDERABAD: Anantapur Police on Thursday seized a truck in which cash amounting to Rs 3.90 crore was hidden in four bags. Police claimed that the truck was registered with Obulapuram Mining Corporation owned by former minister G Janardhana Reddy,who is now in CBI custody. The truck which was coming from Bellary did not have any cargo,and was proceeding towards Anantapur when it was seized during a routine check on Andhra-Karnataka border.
Orissa flood toll 26,relief work begins
BHUBANESWAR: Rains hindered air-dropping of food and relief operations for the second day on Thursday and the toll mounted to 26,even as flood waters receded in most places in the Mahanadi delta region. Among the 26 dead,10 are from Kendrapara district. At least 12 of the dead were either swept away or drowned,Special Relief Commissioner P K Mohapatra said. Revenue Minister S N Patro said though water receded in most places,people in five gram panchayats remained marooned,for whom food will be air-dropped.
Mumbai blasts: 27th victim dies in hospital
MUMBAI: The death toll in the 13/7 Mumbai triple blasts rose to 27 as another victim succumbed to injuries on Thursday. Prashant Joshi,who was injured in the Zaveri Bazaar blast died at JJ hospital. Joshi had sustained severe head injuries and had shrapnel in his brain which was surgically removed. He had also suffered 10 per cent burns on his hands and lost his eyesight. A businessman,Joshi is survived by his wife and seven-year-old son.
6 Jkhand taekwondo players hurt in clash
ALLAHABAD: At least six players of the taekwondo team of Jharkhand,who were on their way to attend a sporting event in Haryana,were injured in a clash with some monthly season ticket holders between Mirzapur and Allahabad in Moori Express on Thursday. The Inspector in-charge,GRP police station,Lakhan Singh,said when the group of the taekwondo players objected to the MST pass holders occupying reserved seats in S-3,the former got into an argument. This led to an altercation and an exchange of blows.
Husain works fetch 4.2 m at auction
NEW YORK: M F Husains Sprinkling Horses,a dynamic depiction of horses alongside a human figure,has fetched a whopping 1.14 million at an auction in Christies,where another 12 of his masterpieces were sold. As many as 13 of Husains paintings,which went under the hammer at Christies auction of South Asian modern and contemporary art,were sold for a total of 4.2 million dollars. Husains other painting Yatra,a representation of rural India,was sold for 932,5000,while The Three Graces,depicting two women and horses,fetched 482,500. More of Husain paintings will go on auction at Sothebys.
Bad weather: Andhra CM plane fails to land
HYDERABAD: Poor weather forced a Kingfisher Airlines aircraft with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on board to hover for over 45 minutes Thursday morning before it landed safely at Madhurapudi airport in Rajahmundry,giving some anxious moments to the state administration. The Air Traffic Control at Madhurapudi airport did not give ground clearance for the aircraft from Hyderabad to land at the scheduled time as there was no clear visibility. The CM was to arrive in Rajahmundry by flight and fly by helicopter to West Godavari.
