Pacheco moves SC for anticipatory bail

NEW DELHI: Former Goa Tourism Minister Francisco Mickey Pacheco has moved the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the death of his woman friend Nadia Torrado in Chennai. The bail plea is likely to be listed for hearing on Thursday. The Goa bench of the Bombay HC had on June 21 rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Pacheco and his close aide Lyndon Monteiro on technical grounds.

NIA to probe Kerala IGs Qatar visit

NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency NIA will probe the alleged meeting of suspended Kerala IGP Tomin J Thachankary with certain people having terror links during his Qatar visit earlier this year. We have got reports from the Qatar Mission and as well as from other security agencies. Therefore we have asked NIA to inquire into the matter, Home Secretary G K Pillai said on Wednesday.

AGARTALA: The Tripura assembly has unanimously supported a proposal to rename Agartala airport as Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore airport,as part of the celebration of the 15oth birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate. The House decided to pass a formal proposal and send it to the Aviation Ministry within this session.

Babbar Khalsa terrorist held

AMRITSAR: An alleged Babbar Khalsa terrorist has been arrested and one AK 47 rifle,three magazines and 72 live cartridges were recovered from his possession here. Police arrested Sher Singh,a resident of Bhutal village in Sangrur district on Tuesday. Singh had earlier spent around six years in jail for his involvement in various bomb blast cases.

Maulana thrashed by women

LUCKNOW: A maulana and some employees of a madarasa were allegedly thrashed by a group of women for endorsing a one-sided talaq,police said. Enraged by the talaq given by Ali Imran to his wife Mumtaz Fatima alias Heena,the group of women,including Heena herself thrashed maulana Asgar Ali and two others of Sulatannual Madaris here on Tuesday.

Shah Rukh Khans security cut down

MUMBAI: Mumbai Police has cut security cover of several Bollywood celebrities and politicians including actor Shah Rukh Khan after reviewing threat perception to them. In a meeting held in May,DGP D Sivanandan reviewed threat perception to 78 people and ordered withdrawal of security of 54 while downsizing the cover for the rest,said sources in the Protection and Security Department.

Couple get lifer for trying to kill infant

MALKANGIRI ORISSA: Samjit Mandal 26 and his wife Amela Baroi 22 were given life sentence by a local court on Wednesday for attempting to murder their 8-month-old boy last year. Samjit and Amela had poisoned their son Surojit on May 7 and abandoned him in some bushes in a forest,in order to take a pleasure trip to Visakhapatnam. They were also fined Rs 15,000 each.
