Taslima in Delhi for visa extension
NEW DELHI: Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin is in the Capital to get her Indian visa extended since it expires on August 16. She is trying for a permanent residency in the country. According to sources,when her visa was extended earlier,Taslima was told that it would be the last extension under the miscellaneous category. In 2007,her book Dwinkhondito had created a controversy,with some Muslim organisations demanding that she leave Bengal where she was kept in an undisclosed location for few months.
Rathore case put off till today
CHANDIGARH: The hearing of the bail petition of former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore,sentenced to an 18-month prison term in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case,was deferred till Wednesday. The CBI had on Monday strongly opposed Rathores bail plea before the High Court,submitting that he must undergo some part of marginal sentence awarded to him.
Girl hurt as brother throws acid on her
BULANDSHAHR: A girl was on Tuesday severely injured when her brother threw acid on her for being in love with a boy from another religion,the police said here. Gulshan,from Charora village,was found lying unconscious on the bank of a canal. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr S P Ahuja said the girl was brought to the district hospital by a home guard and admitted with 55 per cent burns. A case has been registered and her father Asgar has been arrested. Her brother is still absconding.
4 months after fire,N-E school reopens
ITANAGAR: A prayer meeting was held in memory of 10 students who were burnt to death in a private hostel of the Holy Angel Don Bosco school,which reopened on Tuesday after nearly four months. Parents of some of the deceased attended the meeting held on the school premises at Palin. Classes will start regularly from Wednesday.
