Emergency landing by SpiceJet flight
MUMBAI: A Spicejet Mumbai-Hyderabad flight made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport early on Friday morning after smoke was detected in the cargo hold. The aircraft took off at 5.30 am. The pilot sent distress calls to the ATC soon after he found the cargo fire alarm had gone off. The aircraft made an emergency landing at 6.05 am at the airport. A DGCA official said the fire at the cargo hold might have been put out by the fire extinguishers. While some passengers were accommodated on alternative flights soon after the incident,many others had to wait till 1.30 pm to fly to Hyderabad.
Leopard strays into Hema Malini house
MUMBAI: A leopard strayed into actress-MP Hema Malinis bungalow Friday and left hours later,forest officials said. The film star was not present when the cat,from the adjoining Sanjay Gandhi National Park,made its stopover. The caretaker noticed the leopard on the bungalow lawns and alerted local police and park officials,who sent a team with a cage and tranquilisers. However,the leopard had left the premises before the team arrived.
One killed in land dispute
VARANASI: One person was killed and four critically injured in a clash between two groups over a property dispute. The clash broke out on Thursday night in which Radhey Shyam was killed. The injured were rushed to a hospital,DIG Lalji Shukla said. One of the 11 accused named by the victim had been arrested,Shukla said.
HC rejects plea in exhumation case
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court on Friday rejected the application of social activist Teesta Setalvad,seeking quashing of the FIR against her in the 2006 Pandarwada case,where bodies of post-Godhra riot victims were exhumed four years after they were buried. Justice G B Shah,however,quashed the summons asking her to appear on May 31.
Senior journalist dies in accident
KOCHI: Senior journalist K D Dayal,news editor and Alappuzha unit chief of Malayalam daily Kerala Kaumudi,died when his car collided with a tanker lorry at Eramalloor. Dayal 53 is survived by his wife and two children. He was returning home from office when the accident occurred on Thursday night. Police said Dayal died on way to hospital.
Murder of poll agent: 10 get life
MADHEPURA: A court on Friday sentenced 10 persons to life imprisonment in a murder case that took place in Bihar in 1999. The accused were found guilty of killing Kailash Gupta,who was Chausa block election agent for RJD leader Lalu Prasad. The convicts shot Gupta at a polling centre in Chausa on October 3,1999.
