SC orders magisterial probe in Mirchpur case

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a magisterial probe into allegations that victims of the Mirchpur Dalit violence were being targeted by those accused of killing an elderly Dalit and his daughter in the village. A bench of justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly asked the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Hisar district to conduct the inquiry and submit a report in two weeks.

Veerappans wife taken to Tamil Nadu

BANGALORE: The wife of slain brigand Veerappan was on Monday taken from a jail in Bangalore to Gopichettipalyam in Tamil Nadu,where a case is pending against her,police said. Muthulakshmi has been acquitted in all the five cases against her in Karnataka,but a case in Tamil Nadu is still pending.

Court orders release of three Chinese

BAHRAICH: A UP court on Monday ordered the release of three Chinese,currently lodged in Lucknow Jail,for deportation after they deposited the Rs 1 lakh fine slapped on them. They were arrested on January 17 for entering India without valid papers and are expected to be handed over to the Chinese embassy on Tuesday.

Hand over case to SIT: Sadiq Jamals kin

AHMEDABAD: Shabbir Jamal Mehtar,brother of Sadiq Jamal who was killed in an alleged encounter in January 2003,told the Gujarat High Court that he would not press for a CBI probe if the case is given to the Special Investigation Team appointed by the HC to probe the Ishrat Jahan Encounter Case.

Phatak appointed chief of dev board

Mumbai: Former Mumbai municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak,who is under the scanner for his role in the Adarsh scam,was appointed as chairman of the Rest of Maharashtra Statutory Development Board on Monday. Phatak,who was on deputation to the Central government,had sought to return to his parent cadre.

Insurance cover for Amarnath pilgrims

JAMMU: The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board on Monday said no pilgrim will be allowed to enter the base camp at Jammu and the Valley,or proceed to the shrine without a valid yatra permit for a specified date and route. An accidental insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh for all registered pilgrims has also been approved.

Four arrested for lions death

RAJKOT: Four persons were on Monday arrested in connection with an Asiatic lions death near Valar village in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. The forest department said the lion could have been electrocuted after it came in contact with an electrified fence built around the farmhouse of one of the arrested. The department,however,is yet to investigate if they arrested men took away the claws and skin.

10 killed as tractor overturns

Hyderabad: At least 10 persons,including nine women,were killed in Guntur district when the tractor in which they were travelling fell into the Nagarjuna Sagar canal on Monday morning. The tractor was carrying 26 daily-wagers. Ten bodies have been recovered so far.
