Srinagar sex scam: Witnesses turn hostile
Chandigarh: A witness in the Srinagar sex abuse case,Abdul Gaffar Vani,turned hostile on Thursday,saying he did not know Sabina the kingpin of the racket or about the presence of a brothel in the locality. He stayed in the same locality where the sex racket was allegedly being run. The CBI pleaded that three other witnesses had been won over by the accused.
Another honour killing: Couple dead
CHANDIGARH: Haryana witnessed another honour killing this week when 16-year-old Usha Rani Kashyap was allegedly hanged to death by her brother Ravi for falling in love with her neighbour Rakesh Kashyap. While Usha was killed on Monday,on Thursday morning,Rakesh8217;s body was found hanging from a tree in the village. Usha and Rakesh belonged to the same gotra.
No black magic in Asaram ashram: CID
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat CID,probing the death of two boys in Asaram Bapus ashram in Ahmedabad on July 2008,has told the High Court that it found no evidence of black magic being practiced in the ashram. Places were thoroughly searched8230; but no material suggesting practice of black magic has been found, a report filed in the court by investigating officer,DSP P M Parmar said.
Cooler in jail,Mukhtar Ansari shifted out
LUCKNOW: Independent UP MLA Mukhtar Ansari has been shifted from Ghazipur Jail to Mathura Jail after a raid by a Special Task Force led to recovery of an LPG cylinder,a gas stove and a cooler from his cell,officials said Thursday. Ghazipur District Magistrate will investigate how Ansari managed to get these items inside the jail,they added.
Police challenge Nooriyas bail
MUMBAI: Police Thursday approached a local court challenging the bail granted to Nooriya Haveliwala,accused of mowing down two persons allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Nooriya was granted bail on March 31 by a metropolitan magistrates court on a surety of Rs 15,000 after the police failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 60-day period.

SC no to belated land acquisition pleas
NEW DELHI: A belated challenge to land acquisition proceedings by owners deserves to be dismissed as it may be a deliberate attempt to abuse the law,the Supreme Court said Thursday. The court dismissed the appeal of Swaran Lata and certain other land owners challenging Haryanas decision to acquire vast tracts of private land in 2004 after issuing the necessary notifications. When a person challenges Section 4 notification land acquisition on any ground,it should be challenged within a reasonable period, the court observed.
Leopard dies of hunger in Valsad
SURAT: Forest Department officials Thursday found the body of a 4-year-old leopard,suspected to have died of hunger,in fields in Vasda forest range in Gujarats Valsad district. The officials ruled out that it was a case of poaching.
