Dar-Ul-Uloom condemns veil ban

MUZAFFARNAGAR: Leading Islamic seminary Darul-Ul- Uloom Deoband has condemned the ban on use of the veil by Muslim women in some European countries. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Maulana Abdul Khalique Madrasi has condemned the European countries,especially Belgium,for the law forbidding Muslim women from wearing a veil.

PLFI commander,associates held

GUMLA JHARKHAND: An area commander of the Peoples Liberation Front of India PLFI was arrested along with his two associates in Naxal-affected Gumla district,the police said. Acting on a tip-off,a police team arrested area commander Parmeshwar alias Prem Gope,Puljen Kerketta and Nilambar Gope,SP Narendra Kumar Singh told reporters on Saturday.

LEICESTER UK: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt hit the campaign trail in UK on Saturday in support of Indian-origin Labour MP,Keith Vaz,who is seeking re-election from the Leicester East constituency better known as Little India. Accompanied by Raj Kundra,Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty8217;s husband,Dutt and Vaz travelled in a cavalcade greeting people around the Belgrave area,the hub of Indian culture and business in the town. I hope the 8216;Munnabhai effect8217; will help my dear friend Keith Vaz. I have stopped politics in India,but wanted to show my support to Keith and people of Indian origin here, Dutt said.

IAS officer in 14-day judicial custody

NEW DELHI: Radhey Shyam Sharma,an Indian Railway and Engineering Officer of the 1984 batch and an accused in the corruption case regarding the purchase of bulletproof jackets for the Central paramilitary forces,and two others were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a Delhi court on Saturday. A senior Home Ministry official,Sharma is accused of accepting a Rs 10-lakh bribe in the bulletproof jacket scam and leaking information about the tender.

Teenager raped for deserting Maoists

LATEHAR JHARKHAND: A 16-year-old girl affiliated to a Maoist outfit was allegedly raped by other members for fleeing the camp in Latehar district of Jharkhand, the police said on Saturday. The girl ran away from a camp about five days ago. She was caught by the extremists,beaten up and raped when she refused to return, Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Dwivedi said.

Convict hurls shoe at judge

RAE BARELI: An undertrial escaped from the premises of a court during a scuffle between securitymen and a murder convict,police said here on Saturday. Rahul Singh,an accused in a murder case,managed to escape when a double murder convict,Dayaram,hurled his shoe at the magistrate. In the scuffle that ensued after the latter threw his shoe at Additional CJM Veena Singh on Friday,Singh fled from the court,the police said.

Indian student assaulted in Sydney

MELBOURNE: In yet another attack on Indians in Australia,,a 24-year-old student was severely beaten up in western Sydney on Friday night. The Sydney Morning Herald reported,without identifying the victim,that the student was repeatedly hit by unidentified assailants. Police crime manager Adam Phillips said there was no evidence the attack was racially motivated.
