Nityanandas police custody extended
BANGALORE/CHENNAI: A Karnataka court on Wednesday extended by two more days the police custody of self-styled godman Nityananda Swami,arrested on criminal charges including rape,even as he moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail in three cheating cases. A sessions court extended the custody on a plea by the Criminal Investigation Department seeking more time as Nityanandas questioning had to be halted after he was hospitalised for a day.
Chief Editor of Roshni passes away
SRINAGAR: Abdul Aziz alias Aziz Kashmiri,one of the pioneers of Urdu journalism and the Chief Editor of the Urdu daily Roshni passed away here after a brief illness. Aziz,90,breathed his last at the SMHS hospital on Tuesday evening. Aziz started his career at the age of 19 at a weekly Al Barak.
Shivraj sworn in as Rajasthan Governor
Jaipur: Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil,who has been given additional charge of Rajasthan following the demise of Prabha Rau,was on Tuesday sworn in here. Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla administered the oath of office to Patil at Raj Bhawan. Two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to late Governor Rau. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot among other ministers and bureaucrats.
Cargo ship catches fire,two dead
Kochi: Two Filipino crew of a Singapore-bound foreign cargo vessel died when three cabins on the main deck of the iron ore laden bulk carrier caught fire off the coast near here. Coastguard ship Lakshmi Bai and a dornier aircraft were rushed from here early on Tuesday in response to a distress call from M V Arosia,an Antigua amp; Barbuda flagged bulk carrier. The vessel was on a voyage from New Mangalore. Essential repairs to the communication equipment,damaged in the fire,would also be carried out,they said adding the ship had been anchored off Kochi.
MBBS examinees vandalise centre
Ara Bihar: Eleven persons were injured when some MBBS students who were allegedly cheating during an examination vandalised the centre at Veer Kunwar Singh University here,protesting a surprise inspection by the varsitys Pro Vice-chancellor Sachindra Kumar Singh,officials said on Wednesday. The students demanded that they be allowed to cheat and smashed furniture and clashed with those who tried to resist.
Mild quake hits Northeast
SHILLONG: An earthquake of mild intensity shook parts of the North-East on Tuesday night,meteorological department sources said on Wednesday. The earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale was felt in the North-East region at 7:51 pm on Tuesday night. The epicentre of the earthquake was in southern Manipur.
