JALAUN UP: At least 23 people were killed and 50 others injured when a bus carrying a marriage party plunged into a river in Madhogarh area of the district on Wednesday. The accident took place when the bus was going to Rudrapur in Jalaun from Muraina district of Madhya Pradesh,Superintendent of Police Prem Gautam said. Three passengers were yet to be traced,he said.

Bus falls into gorge,6 hurt

KOZHIKODE: Six persons were injured,one of them seriously,when the bus they were travelling in from Bangalore to Kozhikode hit a rock while negotiating a curve and rolled down a 60-feet gorge near Thamarassery on Wednesday,police said. Rescuers from Kozhikode and Wayanad rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. The condition of the driver is reportedly critical.

MiG trials: Goa MP protests

PANAJI: Congress MP from Goa Shantaram Naik Wednesday lodged a verbal protest with the Defence Ministry over the Navys callous attitude in keeping the state in dark over its MiG plane trials off the states coast.He called up Joint Secretary Navy In-charge in the ministry Binoy Kumar to protest against Navys act of not informing the state about the trial flight of newly-inducted fighter planes,which had triggered suspicion of a bomb blast.

Centre misleading SC on projects,says MP

NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday accused the Centre of misleading the apex Court on the issue of canal work for Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar projects. The state took objection to the affidavit filed by the Ministry of Environment and Forest in which it said the project cannot be allowed as Command Area Development Plan has not been submitted to it by authorities concerned. The court was hearing the appeal by the state against the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court restraining it from carrying out canal work.

SC: Notice needed to assess income

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court said it is mandatory for the Income Tax Department to serve a notice to the assesee before it initiates assessment of undisclosed income. The apex court considered the provisions of Chapter XIV-B of the Income Tax Act which deals with special procedure for assessment of search cases,while deciding on an appeal filed by the I-T department on carrying out block assessment against respondent,Hotel Blue Moon,Guwahati.

Gujarat keeping eye on places Rana visited

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat police are keeping a tab on all the places which Tahawwur Hussain Rana and his wife,Samraz Akhtar,may have visited in November 2008 and tracking activities there,DGP S S Khandwawala said on Wednesday. He added that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure security of the people statewide.

Darbari fails to appear for hearing

KOCHI: Joint Director General of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee T S Darbari,who was summoned by Kerala Customs after diamond-studded ornaments were seized from him at Kochi airport on January 29,failed to appear before the Customs authorities on Tuesday due to medical reasons.
