MUMBAI: Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was on Friday admitted to the Lilavati Hospital after he suffered brain hemorrhage. Doctors at the hospital said a surgery was performed on the 70-year-old singer and that his condition was critical.

LUCKNOW: A special CBI court in Ghaziabad on Friday awarded life term to two men for the 2006 kidnapping and murder of Kavita Rani Chowdhary,a lecturer at Meeruts Chowdhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. Those sentenced to life are Sultan Singh, and Ravindra Singh. Yogesh,another accused,was sentenced to three years.

BJP leader set on fire,daughter dies

Dehradun: The daughter of a BJP leader on Friday died of shock after she allegedly witnessed her mother being set on fire by a person over personal enmity in Rishikesh,police said. Geeta Shanker,zonal president of Uttarakhand BJP womens wing,was allegedly set on fire by Lakshman Singh at her house. Her daughter Khushboo 17,who was present,went into a state of shock. Khushboo was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died during treatment. Geeta was referred to government hospital.

Short shifts for low ranking Mumbai cops

MUMBAI: Lower-ranking officers from 20 police stations of the citys central region will have to work only for eight hours,instead of a regular 12 hours shift in a day,an initiative implemented on a trial basis,police said on Friday. If it is successful,the other four police regions,which have at least 70 police stations may also implement the initiative,started a few days ago to reduce stress level among the overworked force,they said.
