Rafat Alam is new CJ of Allahabad HC
ALLAHABAD: Justice Syed Rafat Alam will be the new Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. The Governor will administer the oath to Justice Alam,currently Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court,on August 5. Justice Alam will succeed Justice F I Rebello,who retired on July 30. Currently,Justice Amitava Lala is acting Chief Justice of the high court. Justice Alam had spent a better part of his career as a high court judge in Allahabad,and was sworn in as the Chief Justice of MP High Court in December 2009.
Teesta gets anticipatory bail
AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad City Sessions Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to activist Teesta Setalvad in connection with a case of allegedly fabricating affidavits on behalf of the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre victims and producing the same before the Supreme Court. The court has asked her to produce self-surety of Rs 25,000 and surrender her passport within three days,besides adhering to regular bail conditions. Fearing her arrest in the case,Setalvad had moved the anticipatory bail application. Her plea was opposed by the state government,which argued she might be using the foreign funds to win over witnesses in the case.
NCM to file case against Swamy
NEW DELHI: National Commission for Minorities NCM on Tuesday decided to file a case for spreading enmity between communities against Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy,for his article suggesting revoking voting rights of Muslims. We will register an FIR,take up the matter with the authorities concerned Election Commission of India and other organisations concerned,in a couple of days, chairman Wajahat Habibullah said of the decision taken at a Commission meeting. He said Swamy has violated relevant sections of IPC,Representation of Peoples Act and IT Act,and the Commission will file a case accordingly.
Court reserves order on Tiwari plea
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on the plea of veteran Congress leader N D Tiwari that he cannot be compelled to give his blood sample for the DNA test. The test is to be conducted for ascertaining the claim of 31-year-old Rohit Shekhar,who claims to be the politicians biological son. Despite court rulings against him,Tiwari has refused to turn up for furnishing his blood sample for the test.
Ex-CSB chief Neera Dogra dies at 102
NEW DELHI: Neera Dogra,former chairperson of the Central Social Board,CSB died in Chennai on July 21. She was 102. She headed the CSB during 1969-1974. Originally from Assam,she contributed to the setting up of the Social Welfare Board in Guwahati and the first Montessorie school in the 50s. She was also a member of the Committee on the Status of Women.
