Posco: Work at site resumes after 10 days
PARADIP: Stalled since June 26,work at the proposed site for Poscos controversial Rs 52,000 crore steel plant in Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa resumed on Tuesday. Forest and acquired betelvine farm area clearance as well as work for a rehabilitation colony were underway in Gadakujanga and Nuagaon areas,Jagatsinghpur district collector N C Jena said. Work had come to a halt after villagers and activists of the United Action Committee staged a dharna demanding immediate fulfillment of their six-point demands,including enhanced compensation and proper rehabilitation.
Producer Doshi gets three years in jail
MUMBAI: Six years afterBollywood producer Gaurang Doshis wife filed a dowry harassment case against him,a local court sentenced him to three years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000. Doshis estranged wife Madhuri had moved the court under Section 498 A and 406 of the Indian Penal Code for dowry harassment and breach of trust. Madhuri reported demands for Rs 5 lakh in dowry,harassment,physical abuse and ill-treatment soon after her marriage in 1994. Madhuri,who is a fashion designer,has been living separately ever since.
Security breach: NIA website shut
NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency NIA has closed its website following reports of security breach. Sources in the National Informatics Centre NIC,which handles all government websites,reported an urgent message from the NIA asking to shut down its website after a potential security breach. Taking a cue from the hacking incident of CBI and recent attempt to enter into the NSG internal mail,we decided to revisit our security mechanism of the website, said a senior NIA official.
HC issues notices to Big B,Sony TV
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Amitabh Bachchan and Sony Television in response to a PIL which challenges a promo for Kaun Banega Crorepati,claiming it insulted and maligned the slogan Tum mujhe khoon do,main tumhe azadi doonga,coined by Subhash Chandra Bose. The notices were issued by Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice G S Godbole who asked Bachchan,and Sony Television to file a reply by July 28.
Turban row: Australian hotel says sorry
MELBOURNE: An Australian hotel,which ejected a Sikh man from its premises for wearing a turban,has apologised to him while admitting that its policy of no headwear should be applied with sensitivity to religious and cultural beliefs. The Sikh man was asked to leave the Royal English Hotel in suburban Brisbane,owned by Coles subsidiary Spirit Hotels, because of his turban. The general manager offered an apology on behalf of the hotel a Coles spokesman said.
Rs 6,500-cr hawala racket busted
Mumbai: Maharashtra Sales Tax department claimed to have unearthed a major hawala racket having a turnover of Rs 6,500 crore after raiding 37 firms in the city. We found that transactions worth around Rs 6,500 crore were carried out by 37 companies since 200amp;, a sales tax official said on Tuesday. We conducted raids on Monday at 12 places including Grant Road,Charni Road,Kalbadevi,Opera House and Virar from where the companies were operating, he added.
