Raima Sen,who plays an adulterous housewife in Mirch, shares her views on the subject and more…
What is your take on the concept of Mirch which has four women committing adultery?
The premise of the stories is how four women use their intelligence to fool their husbands when they are caught red-handed with another man! It shows how women can be witty and intelligent when caught in an embarrassing situation. I found it very interesting as I never imagined that something like this could actually happen.
What is your role in the film?
There are four stories in the film. I play a housewife in two of them, while one belongs to ancient times, the other is a contemporary woman.
Do you think that this could happen in real life?
The women may have got away with some quick thinking even after their husbands caught them with other men in the film, but I doubt whether they could do so in real life.
Were you apprehensive about the lovemaking scenes in the film?
I was very apprehensive about these bold scenes because I had not done anything like this before. It took a lot of convincing on my director Vinay Shuklas part to make me agree to do them and its something I would not like to do again.
How was it working with Vinay Shukla?
Vinay has changed a lot since I worked with him in Godmother. He is more fun now,and frankly, his coming up with the idea of Mirch was a revelation for me. Even when my father saw the film he couldnt believe that Vinay had made it.
Have you thought about the audience reaction to such a bold film?
I am sure that women will love it but I am curious to see how men will react to it! They will be forced to think whether such a thing can really happen!
Were you surprised at the rave reviews your Bengali film,Naukadubi, got at the International Film Festival of India?
Rituparno Ghosh is an extremely sensitive filmmaker and the story of the film was based on Rabindranath Tagores work. So I was confident about the film, and I was glad that both Riya and I were lauded for our performances.
How would you describe your friendship with Rituparno?
Rituparno is my favourite person in the whole world,if I may say. He knows everything about me,and I am extremely comfortable with him whether we are working or just hanging out.
Which recent film has impressed you immensely?
I saw The Social Network recently and I was struck by how a girls rejection could trigger off such a series of events in a mans life.
How would you compare Bengali and Hindi films?
A movie is a movie whether its in Hindi or Bengali. But working in Bengali films is more relaxing for me as I generally shoot in my hometown,Kolkata. Like presently I am shooting for Abosheshey with Rupa Ganguly in Kolkata and I am enjoying myself.
