Bodies of Armymen killed in avalanche sent home

The bodies of all the 17 soldiers,including an officer,who were killed in an avalanche at Khilanmarg near Gulmarg on Monday,were flown to their native places in two special planes on Tuesday morning. The Army said the condition

of the injured who were rescued by the Army and police teams is stated to be stable and most of them have been discharged from the hospitals.

Defence spokesman said bodies of all the 17 soldiers were brought to Srinagar from Gulmarg. This morning,after completion of formalities,the bodies of the soldiers were flown to their native towns. He said the bodies of eight jawans who belonged to Jammu and Punjab were flown in one plane. Bodies of nine soldiers were flown to Delhi,from where they would be taken to Rajasthan,Manipur and Ranchi, he said. The body of Lt Prateek was sent to his home town,Indore.

On Monday,17 Army personnel were killed and 17 others were injured when an avalanche struck an acclimatisation camp of the High Altitude Warfare School in Khilanmarg. Police and Army teams rescued dozens of jawans from mounds of snow and used avalanche victim detectors and snuffer dogs to locate the soldiers buried under the snow. After the tragic incident,the formations and units deployed in the upper reaches of Kashmir and along the LoC have been asked to take extra precautions.

On Tuesday,the states Disaster Management Cell issued warnings regarding avalanches in the upper reaches of the Valley and asked people of Uri,Drass,Gulmarg,Tanghdar,Dawar,Gurez,Doda,Kisthtwar to take extra precautions.
