BJD hand-in-glove with Naxals: Oppn

The BJD government is hand-in-glove with Maoists

The abduction of BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka and that of two Italians by Maoists led to an uproar in the Orissa Assembly on Saturday, with the Opposition parties alleging that the state government was hand-in-glove with Maoists.

The BJD government is hand-in-glove with Maoists. It was clear when Maoist-backed panchayat representatives supported BJD candidates in the recent zilla parishad elections in Koraput, said Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh.

The Congress and BJD had won 14 zilla parishad seats each out of the 29 seats in the region in the recent elections in the state. The remaining one seat,Narayanpatna, was won by an Independent,Zuro Mouka, who was supported by Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha that is backed by the Maoists.

Mouka sided with the BJD after the ruling party agreed to meet three demands from the Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha, which included return of tribal land and an inquiry into the 2009 Narayanpatna police firing in which two were killed.

The Congress said it was contemplating to bring a no-confidence motion against the state government. The Congress Legislature Party also demanded Naveen Patnaiks resignation,Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan said. We are contemplating to bring a no-confidence motion against the state government for its failure in tackling the Maoist menace, he said.

BJP leader and former minister Jaynarayan Mishra also alleged there is an understanding between the BJD government and Maoists. How can the common people be safe in Orissa where an MLA has been abducted by Maoists, he said.

Terming the allegation as completely false and baseless, government chief whip in assembly R N Pani said it is not the time to politicise the issue.
