Bengal sets up fire panel

The West Bengal government will go in for a complete overhaul of its ailing fire services department,Mamata announced.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday set up a committee headed by Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh to check fire safety measures at hospitals,shopping malls and other commercial institutions.

We are aware of the situation and we are going in for a total change. You know we started midway. The department is in bad shape. Grass has grown at some fire stations,fire engines do not work. We have started taking stock and facilities will be better soon, the Chief Minister said.

The state cabinet today also passed the proposal for Group C and Group D jobs in the state government to be given to the next of kin of the victims.
