Former chief minister Jyoti Basus condition further deteriorated on Friday with his vital organs failing to function. Stating that the CPIM patriarch was very,very critical,an attending doctor said he was suffering from multiple organ failure and was totally dependent on life support system.

He is very,very critical. Three organs lung,kidney and the haemodynamic system have failed and now his heart and liver are also deteriorating, said Dr A K Maity,Basus personal physician who is also on the medical board of AMRI Hospital. Maity said the 95-year-old was on full ventilation and doctors would monitor his condition throughout the night.

Most of his vital organs are leading to failure, confirmed Susrut Banerjee,one of the members of Basus medical board at AMRI Hospital.

Doctors said all efforts were being made to revive his kidneys with a second dialysis. Banerjee said Basu underwent dialysis for three hours today and would also undergo it tomorrow. Basu had undergone a two-hour dialysis last night.

Basu was admitted at AMRI on January 1 following lung congestion and breathing distress. When asked how his father was,Basus son,Chandan,replied: What more shall I say? Dr Maity has said it all.

Meanwhile,Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was among those who visited the ailing leader in hospital today. CPIM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury,who also visited the hospital,said: Basu has always been a fighter. Dialysis has been done on him and he received it well. His age is a factor but I hope he will respond to treatment.
