Army Chief suspends Egypt constitution

The head of Egypts armed forces issued a declaration on Wednesday suspending the constitution and appointing the head of the constitutional court as interim head of state.

In a televised broadcast,flanked by military leaders,religious authorities and political figures,General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi effectively declared the removal of elected Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Sisi said President Morsi is replaced by chief justice of constitutional court,a year after he was elected.

Sisi called for presidential and parliamentary elections,a panel to review the constitution and a national reconciliation committee that would include youth movements. He said the roadmap had been agreed by a range of political groups.

Sisi also warned the armed forces,police will deal decisively with violence.

Meanwhile,fireworks burst over Cairos Tahrir Square,the centre of protests against Morsi,and across the Egyptian capital after the army suspended the constitution and appointed a new,interim head of state.

Police back army

The Interior Ministry sided with the army and vowed not to favour any one political movement over another. Asserting that police belong to the people,the ministry issued a statement to fully support the armys stand. The police apparatus renews its vow to8230; protect citizens and vital state institutions, the statement said.
