The BJP on Friday demanded the resignation of Defence Minister A K Antony, charging him with patronising corruption,as it intensified its attack on the government over the alleged bribe offer to the Army Chief for clearance of the Tatra truck contracts.
BJPs Prakash Javadekar raised the issue during zero hour in the Rajya Sabha. He pointed fingers at Antonys role in the light of revelations that some Congress leaders had forwarded letters to him suggesting a probe into the Tatra contracts in 2009.
Referring to reports that Ghulam Nabi Azad wrote to Antony in 2009 on the matter,he charged that if the Defence Minister had not acted on the complaint,he had no right to remain in the post. If the probe in Tatra trucks is continuing from 2009 to 2011,if it is not completed in two years, then this government and this Defence Minister are trying to cover up corruption. If you are patronising corruption, you have no right to remain in power. The Defence Minister should resign, he said.
He rejected Antonys clarification before the House earlier that he did not act on the Army Chiefs information on bribe offer in absence of any written complaint.
Later,BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad said the party was yet to decide whether to demand Antonys removal. But he said Javadekar was a senior party member and the issue he raised reflected the seriousness with which BJP viewed it.
