Another diamond polisher committed suicide in Surat on Sunday. A total of 14 people associated with the diamond industry had ended their lives in the last couple of months in Surat alone.

According to sources,24-year-old Alpesh Dhandhukia,a resident of Gurukrupa apartment in Deepnagar society in Katargam,consumed poison at his rented house on Sunday morning. He was staying alone and was earlier working in a diamond unit at Nandu Doshi Wadi in Katargam. He was rushed to the nearby Prannath Hospital for treatment,where he was declared dead by doctors late in the night. The body was later shifted to the New Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police sources said the deceased was working in a diamond unit for the last five years. He was jobless after Diwali and was struggling for his livelihood. Alpesh hails from Rajkot. The diamond industry in the area is reeling under a crisis. Many small and big units in Surat city have been closed.

Many unit owners have reduced the wages of diamond polishers besides cutting short the work timings.
