The Criminal Investigation Department of the Jammu amp; Kashmir Police will set up a temporary outpost at Sanauli border in Uttar Pradeshs Maharajganj district to verify the background of Kashmiris returning from Pakistan via Nepal to surrender under the Jamp;K governments rehabilitation policy for militants.
The outpost was suggested by the Union home ministry after the controversial arrest of alleged Hizbul Mujahideen militant Syed Liyaqat Ali Shah by the Delhi Police in March, sources said.
The Delhi Police had claimed they had arrested Shah from Gorakhpur and that he was planning a suicide attack in the capital ahead of Holi. But a NIA court freed Shah in May after the NIA failed to find any evidence to link Shah to the suspected terror plot.
Since the incident,a Jamp;K police CID sub-inspector has been staying near Sanuali or visiting the border check-post frequently, said Avinash Chandra,IG at the Sashastra Seema Bals Lucknow frontier headquarters.
The sub-inspector is informed whenever a group of Kashmiris arrive at the border post and he verifies their details with his office in Delhi. The group is then sent to Delhi escorted by a SSB team,Chandra said.
Over the last two years, the SSB has sent about 200 Kashmiris returning from Pakistan or PoK to Jammu and Kashmir through Sanauli or the Rupaidiha border post in Bahraich district.
